Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova

Yesterday, August 27th, was the Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova! In Moldova, this Independence Day is celebrated grandly every year.

In celebration of Moldova's Independence Day, I would like to briefly introduce the history of Moldova and how Independence Day is celebrated!

History of Moldova

Moldova was once under the rule of the Roman Empire, the Eastern Roman Empire, and then the Cuman-Kipchak Confederation.

In the Middle Ages, the Principality of Moldavia was established as an independent state, and in the 15th century, while temporarily under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, it maintained temporary independence during that period.

In the early 19th century, it came under the control of the Russian Empire, and while retaining some autonomy, it was incorporated into the Soviet Union as the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic after the Russian Revolution in 1917.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Moldova declared independence in 1991 and officially became an independent state as the Republic of Moldova on August 27 of the same year.

Independence Day Celebrations

Moldova's Independence Day is a special day that strengthens national unity and honors history and culture.

Around the capital Chisinau, lavish celebrations are held every year, and schools, businesses, and shops close, so many people celebrate this day.

Parades are held in the streets, and people wear the national costume called "ie" and perform the traditional dance "Hora."

It is common to enjoy traditional dishes for Independence Day meals in Moldova.

Here are some representative Moldovan dishes:

  1. Mămăligă: A polenta-like dish based on cornmeal, it is a staple of Moldovan cuisine. It is often eaten with cheese and sausages.

  2. Plăcintă: A pie wrapped in phyllo dough, filled with ingredients such as cheese, potatoes, and cabbage. It offers a rich variety of flavors.

  3. Sarmale: A dish of meat and rice wrapped in cabbage leaves, characterized by the combination of vegetables and meat.

  4. Zamă: A chicken or vegetable-based soup, often eaten as a starter for a meal.

  5. Papanăși: A sweet, donut-like dessert, enjoyed with cream and jam.

While these dishes may have subtle regional variations, they are an important part of Moldova's traditional food culture.

Congratulations once again, Moldova!

Our company will continue to contribute, however small, to the development of Moldova through wine and tourism!
