Mr. Walter's wife is Romanian, and after retiring as First Secretary of the Austrian Embassy in Romania, he pursued his passion for wine-making.
He researched the soil of the Lacerta winery early on and knew it was "one of the best places in the world for wine production." He is passionately dedicated to winemaking, aspiring to "restore the era when Romanian wine was considered of the highest quality."
Although a young winery with 17 years of experience, having replanted the vineyard grapes between 2005 and 2008 and first selling wine in 2011, they produce excellent wines every year thanks to a partnership with Mihai Banita, a highly renowned winemaker in Romania and Eastern Europe. The taste and quality of their wines are guaranteed, even among New World wines! While the high quality means they are a bit more expensive than many affordable Romanian wines, they are an incredible value when compared to French and Italian wines of similar quality!
At Lacerta Winery, in the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Feteasca Neagra vineyards, they prune to leave only two new shoots per branch in early spring, thereby reducing grape yield by half to improve wine quality. Winemaker Mihai Banita uses Romanian, French, and American oak barrels, each with its own distinct character, to create the wines Lacerta aims for.
